Transition Year
St. Michael’s was one of the first schools in the country to pilot the Transition Year Programme. Over the last number of years the programme in the school has been developed and expanded.
During Transition Year, students have opportunities to develop their academic, social and personal skills. In addition to the academic core of English, Irish, Mathematics, French/German, Home Economics/Science, the important areas of Computer Studies, Religious Education, and Careers Education are also taught.
Students also experience a wide range of modular courses, which may include: Sign Language, Introduction to Law, Drama and Stage Management, Sports, Music, Applied Business (Mini-Company), Applied Journalism/Printing (Production of School Year Book).
Work Experience: Students have the opportunity to engage in various chosen careers during their two-week experience in the workplace. This is usually a highlight of the year.
Other highlights of Transition Year include an Outdoor Pursuits weekend, art gallery trips, a “Gaeltacht weekend”, and an experience of Celtic Spirituality during a weekend trip to Glendalough.
Currently Transition Year is optional and is subject to the school’s Transition Year Admissions Policy.
