FIRST YEAR: Students sit the Literacy, Irish and Maths test before they start in St. Michael’s. Students may discuss their results and their progress in their subjects with the Guidance Counsellor if they wish. The Guidance Counsellor is also available to help with subject choice at the end of first year.

THIRD YEAR: Third Year students take an interest test to help determine career categories that might suit them.

Classes given on options available to third years and on subject choices for the Leaving Certificate. Information on all these topics is available in book form so that parents can help in the process of discussion and decision. There is also a parents’ evening in which options, subjects and the transition year are discussedIndividual guidance is given to all third year students on options and subject choice.

St. Michael’s participates in the STEPS programme for those interested in engineering as a career.

TRANSITION YEAR: Interest test to help determine which type of work students would like. Research career options and choose one for work experience. Preparation for work experience: letter, CV, interview preparation. Speakers on careers.

FIFTH YEAR: Fifth Years sit the Differential Aptitute Tests in 5th Year to help with Career Choices. Interest Test to determine level of interest in different career categories. Research into particular careers. Communication skills – presentation of research in class, letter-writing, CV, interview skills. (For those doing LCVP these skills are presented for Leaving Cert. Assessment.) Career talks.

SIXTH YEAR: Opportunity to do further computerized testing of interests. Presentation of career prospects, options in higher and further education. UK universities application procedures. CAO colleges and applications, Post Leaving Cert courses, Private Colleges, Professional Training. Visits to colleges and attendance at higher education conferences. Career talks. Visits by college personnel. Individual guidance on further education/work options. Careers evening for parents.

FACILITIES: Guidance Library with extensive information on careers and college courses in book form, video, file and on CD-Rom. Opportunity to research careers in library and to borrow material for use at home. Internet to access information on careers and colleges. On-line application system for CAO.
